The Summer Work and Learning Program provides supervised work experience and MCAS tutoring for qualified students during a six week period in the summer. Students work 20 hours a week at selected work sites. Over the years we have placed students at the City of Attleboro’s Parks and Recreation Department and the City Library. Project based learning opportunitities such as Culinary arts and Building Maintenance projects offered at Attleboro High School, North Attleboro Fish Hatchery and North Attleboro DPW, Attleboro YMCA, Markman Daycare, ARC and Sturdy Memorial Hospital who provides opportunities in the copy center, storeroom, laundry and food preparation areas.
In addition to the work component all the students participated in job readiness training, portfolio class or MCAS tutoring. When we surveyed the students who participated in the MCAS remediation they all indicated that they would not have otherwise participated in tutoring if it was not for our programming.
This past summer program enrolled 36 students and 34 students (94%) completed all five weeks of the program. All 35 students (99%) experienced skill gains in at least one work-based learning program skills area and 32 (88%) had skill gains in a minimum of two areas.
If you are interested in hosting students and giving them the opportunity to gain valuable work skills, we will support your company with a worksite coordinator and a tutor to provide the academic remediation.
